A Mother’s Thought: I Don’t Want my Kids to Grow up

A couple of years ago, a friend of mine suggested that I read the book Locked in Time by Lois Duncan. It is about the antagonist family who never grows old- the mother and her two kids, after drinking a potion.

I don’t know for other moms but sometimes, I have this selfish and crazy thought of my children not getting old. I would like them to be stuck at what they are right now so I could continue to kiss and hug them whenever I want to. You know when kids grow up, they tend to get shy when their parents kiss them in public which I hate to happen. Perhaps I’m also afraid that when they reach their teenage years they might spend more time outside because of school and other activities and I will not be there all the time to watch who they interact with.

It’s really a challenge to raise kids. Aside from the needs to clothe and feed them, emotional, mental, and spiritual support are essential. We also need to teach them how to be street smart! That’s a lot of parenting work but we would love to with them every step of the way. The best that I can do for now is to spend quality time with them and savor each moment when we’re together. Someday, they will live their dreams, achieve greater things and fulfill their happiness and I’ll be the most delighted of all when I witness that.

Why the sudden drama? Blame it on the pictures below 🙂 I was browsing my Facebook albums yesterday when I stumbled upon my children’s pictures. Sometimes I forget how tiny they used to be. Reminiscing their “younger” days brings a huge smile to my face. I love my babies always and forever. I pray that the closeness and sweetness we share today will last until they have their own families. See these pumpkins? Aren’t they cute? 🙂

  1. Your daughter looks like my niece.

I smiled to myself the first time I read the title. Yes, it’s so true. I don’t understand why time seems so short. But I’m able to picture my mom’s feeling from this point, how I rarely spend my time when I grow up.

    Thanks for sharing.

    1. Thanks, diah. You’re right. When we grow up, we spend lesser time with our parents not realizing they also have shorter time in this world because of their age. Thanks for dropping by my site.. I’ll visit your blog, too 🙂

  2. Totoo yan. Haha. Minsan nakakagulat ang dami na pala nila alam. Hindi na fully dependent sayo. Yung panganay ko mag 9 years old na kaya ang dami na nagagawa mag isa. Yung bunso naman 2 years old ang dami na rin alam. Haha.

  3. Adorable!! And I understand your feelings! but you make good points, our children do need to grow and we can be there at every stage for them. Every stage will have its good and its bad, but they will forever be in our heart no matter how big they get! ❤

  4. I remember reading that book as a teenager! My baby is now 13-years old so I definitely relate to how you feel. He is sweet enough to still let me hug and kiss him, but it’s not like I can rock him in my arms! I can’t wait to have grand-babies to cuddle.
